A traditional fastener is not necessarily a security-rated lock. Additional keyed fittings and properly specified sash stops can improve resistance to casual opening, but the frame, glazing and condition of the timber matter too.
Improving sash window security
Our guidance focuses on traditional timber sliding sash and case windows, rather than assuming every modern window security fitting will work on a heritage sash.
Key-operated sash locks
Keyed fittings can add an extra locking point, but the strength of the fixing depends on sound timber and correct installation. Keep keys accessible where the window is part of an emergency escape route.
Sash stops and opening restrictors
Stops can restrict how far the sash opens for ventilation. They are not automatically equivalent to tested child-safety devices or certified security hardware.
Security starts with the whole window
Check meeting-rail alignment, sash cords or balances, glass, glazing beads, frame fixings and decayed woodwork. A strong lock fitted to rotten timber offers little benefit.
Listed buildings and conservation areas
Replacement ironmongery should respect the historic fabric and appearance. Ask about consent before making alterations where a building is listed or otherwise protected.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fit new locks to old sash windows?
Often, provided the timber is sound and the hardware suits the sash design. Check alignment, clearances and any heritage constraints first.
Will a replacement fastener make my sash window secure?
A meeting-rail fastener mainly holds the sashes together. Additional security may require appropriate locking hardware and repairs to the window itself.
