Why original windows matter
Historic windows contribute through their proportions, timber sections, mouldings, glazing patterns, glass and opening method. Small changes to frame thickness or glazing bars can noticeably alter a traditional elevation, particularly where several windows form a consistent composition.
Maintenance and like-for-like repair
Routine maintenance and carefully matched repairs can often retain the greatest amount of original fabric. Typical work includes sash cords, easing and balancing, local timber splices, putty repairs, paint preparation and weathering repairs. The consent position should still be checked where there is any doubt, especially for listed buildings.
What about double glazing?
Glazing alterations can be more sensitive because they may change the appearance and construction of the sash. Slim-profile systems or secondary glazing may be options in some circumstances.
