Traditional Window Shutter Restoration

Traditional window shutter restoration

We repair original internal shutters, hinges, catches, panels and concealed boxes so these valuable period features can fold, close and secure as they were designed to do.

Made for each opening, traditional shutters form part of the room’s architectural joinery and deserve a repair-led approach.

Window shutter repairs in Stirling

Many Georgian and Victorian Scottish interiors were designed with folding timber shutters. Some remain in regular use; others have been painted shut, covered by later finishes or left incomplete. Because the leaves, hinges and shutter boxes were made specifically for the opening, retaining them usually preserves more character than replacing them with a generic modern product.

We begin by establishing what survives and how the assembly was intended to move. Thick paint, distorted leaves, loose hinges, missing catches and damaged panels can interact, so adjustment should follow a clear sequence rather than forcing the shutters closed.

Shutter problems we can address

Painted-Shut Leaves

Accumulated coatings and sealed joints can be carefully released while protecting adjacent panelling and plaster.

Loose Hinges & Fittings

Fixings, hinges and catches are repaired or replaced with attention to alignment and traditional appearance.

Split or Damaged Panels

Localised joinery repairs can retain original rails, stiles and panels rather than replacing complete leaves.

Obstructed Shutter Boxes

Debris, later alterations and poor alignment are investigated so shutters can fold into their intended recesses.

Our restoration process

  1. Survey: leaves, panels, hinges, catches, boxes and surrounding architraves are recorded.
  2. Careful release: painted joints and obstructions are addressed without forcing fragile components.
  3. Joinery repair: loose joints, splits and local losses are repaired with compatible timber and traditional methods.
  4. Ironmongery work: hinges and catches are serviced, aligned or sensitively replaced where components are missing.
  5. Adjustment and finishing: the leaves are fitted to fold and close correctly before the agreed decorative finish is completed.

Shutters and window upgrades

Working shutters can provide privacy, darkness and an additional insulating layer at night. They do not replace the need to repair defective external sash windows, but both elements can be considered together. If improved comfort is the priority, we may discuss draught proofing or secondary glazing. The available reveal depth and shutter movement must be checked before adding an internal glazing system.

External window repairs, painting and shutter restoration can be phased so that one trade does not unnecessarily disturb newly completed work.

Frequently asked questions

Can shutters that have been painted shut be used again?

Often, yes. The leaves and boxes first need careful investigation because forcing them can split panels or damage hinges.

Can missing shutter parts be reproduced?

Many missing rails, panels, mouldings and small joinery components can be replicated to match surviving evidence.

Will secondary glazing interfere with shutters?

It can if the system is not planned around the shutter arc and recess. Both features should be surveyed together before installation.
