Sash & Case Window Draught Proofing in Stirling

Draught proofing for traditional sash windows

A properly fitted brush-seal system can reduce cold air, dust, noise and window rattles while preserving the movement and appearance of original timber sash and case windows.

Sash window draught proofing in Stirling

Traditional windows need small working clearances so their sashes can move. When those gaps become excessive—or when the window is painted, distorted or poorly balanced—uncontrolled air can pass around the frame. Draught proofing introduces discreet seals at carefully selected contact points rather than permanently sealing the window shut.

The best result comes from treating the window as a complete moving system. We remove the sashes where necessary, inspect the cords and pulleys, correct minor alignment issues and install compatible staff and parting beads with concealed brush seals. The window is then reassembled, balanced and tested.

Benefits of a professional installation

Fewer Cold Draughts

Seals limit uncontrolled airflow around the sashes while still allowing the window to open for ventilation.

Less Rattle & Dust

Brushes cushion loose contact points and help reduce dust entering through excessive gaps.

Original Windows Retained

The intervention works with the historic window instead of replacing its frame, profiles or external appearance.

Smoother Operation

Servicing and rebalancing carried out alongside sealing can make windows safer and easier to use.

What the work involves

  1. Condition check: timber decay, loose joints, failed cords and damaged glazing are identified before seals are fitted.
  2. Careful removal: the sashes and beads are released without unnecessary damage to the surrounding joinery.
  3. Seal installation: discreet brush carriers are positioned at the staff beads, parting beads and meeting rails as appropriate.
  4. Mechanical service: cords, pulleys and counterweights are checked and adjusted to suit the window.
  5. Final testing: both sashes are operated through their travel and checked for closure, ventilation and safe balance.

What draught proofing does—and does not—do

Draught proofing tackles uncontrolled air leakage. It does not change single glass into insulated glass and cannot correct significant timber decay by itself. Where frames are damaged, we complete suitable sash window repairs first. For greater thermal or acoustic improvement, we may also discuss secondary glazing or slimline double glazing.

Ventilation remains important in traditional buildings. Existing vents, fireplaces and moisture conditions should be considered so that improving one source of air leakage does not create a condensation problem elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Will the seals be visible?

The brush carriers are designed to sit discreetly within the window beads and meeting areas. The aim is to preserve the traditional appearance.

Will my windows still open?

Yes. A correctly installed system is designed for working sash windows and should improve, not prevent, normal operation.

Can badly painted windows be draught proofed?

Usually, but excessive paint and binding may need to be corrected first so the sashes can move and the seals can perform consistently.
